2004

When the War in Iraq began Dr. Huff wrote his students a letter that expressed his view of its being a morally illegitimate war of aggression against one of the world’s weakest nations. He asked the students not to think of the war as just another current event, but to do the thinking and reflection that colleges and universities are created to facilitate—especially church related colleges. As an act of protest and repentance he made a vow of silence in his classroom for 1 week. Students were still to do their assignments or they could join him in seated silent meditation.

The Ralph Waldo Emerson Award is given by All Souls Unitarian Universalist church to the individual or group that most furthers the cause of liberal religion in the Shreveport / Bossier community.

It is given yearly at the Sunday service closest to the church's anniversary date (April 17).
In April of 2004, Dr. Peter Huff, Chair of the Religious Studies Dept. at Centenary College, won the annual award.
